混合工作模式實際上使通勤時間更長

疫情期間，日益上升的住房成本和靈活的工作安排引發了全國範圍的城市中心外流。

但儘管美國人不像以前那樣居住在城市中，許多人仍然在城市工作，這至少導致了每週某些日子需要更長的通勤時間。

旅行變遷

很簡單：如果你住得離辦公室更遠，通勤時間就會更長。而且即使你每週只去兩天而不是五天，這一點也依然成立。

根據斯坦福大學經濟學家的研究，自疫情以來，通勤超過 75 英里的工人數量在美國十大城市中增長了驚人的 32%。平均而言，這些“超級通勤”每程需要兩小時 20 分鐘，往返接近五小時。

薪資平台 Gusto 的另一項研究也發現了類似的效果，顯示全國平均通勤距離從 2019 年的 10 英里增至 2023 年的 27 英里。

這一增長在千禧一代和高收入員工中尤為明顯。30 多歲的工人平均通勤時間幾乎增加了三倍，而年收入 25 萬美元或以上的美國人從 12 英里增加到了驚人的 42 英里。

住得遠離市中心通常也會推高通勤成本，因為工人要支付不同的交通系統費用，乘坐實際火車而不是市內公共交通，更多的汽油費或停車費。

通勤後果

遠程工作的一個常被提及的好處是家庭辦公室不需要通勤。但在混合工作模式安排的世界中，情況有所不同。通過在某些工作日換取更長的通勤時間以換取其他日子在家的更多時間，工人實際上增加了他們在路上的總時間。從整個星期的平均通勤時間來看，在這種情況下，混合工作的通勤時間可能會更糟，正如俗話所說，“時間就是金錢”。

但職場也在適應。一些僱主現在提供如共乘車服務，以適應更長的通勤時間和更高的油費。

值得注意的是，這些漫長的通勤並沒有讓工人遠離混合工作安排。根據 2024 年 Morning Consult 的一項調查，混合工作的靈活工作安排現在是美國員工選擇工作的首要考慮。旅行成本可能更高，但在城市外的舒適家居對許多人來說顯然是值得的。
