TikTok videos are racking up millions of views for making fun of the so-called “corporate accent”.

Stuffed to the brim with buzzwords and passive-aggressive phrases, the satirical videos just might hit close to home for certain employees in corporate America.

The TikToker driving this trend is creator Lisa Beasley, who plays a character called Corporate Erin. In her videos, Beasley uses what she calls her “nine-to-five” voice, projecting confidence through quick speech and jargon to disguise the preposterous things she’s actually saying.

Many of the “corporate accent” videos may be exaggerated or absurd. But their popularity speaks to a real feeling of ennui among younger workers.

Nearly half of all millennial and Gen Z workers have felt out of the loop at work due to the sort of corporate speak satirized by these TikToks, according to a survey by LinkedIn (MSFT) and Duolingo (DUOL). For companies concerned about retaining talent, the trending videos may be a red flag to look out for.
