When College Doesn’t Prepare You for the Workforce

When College Doesn’t Prepare You for the Workforce

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

From Campus to Cubicle

A college education is often seen as a prerequisite to reach certain career and financial goals.  But not all of today’s workers see it that way.

Nearly half of employees feel that college failed to prepare them for their current job, according to a survey of workers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, published by Australian learning company Go1.

Learning Shortfalls

Respondents pointed to hands-on experience and on-the-job training as the better teachers compared to their university education, which 46% of surveyed employees said wasn’t as useful.

Many also felt college failed to teach them professional fundamentals, such as how to work across departments or climb the corporate ladder.

Bridging the Gap

Many companies invest in reskilling or upskilling their employees, including classes on soft skills and other professional basics to make them more effective at their jobs. These opportunities may be especially valuable for employees who entered the workforce during the pandemic, when many companies were fully remote, and job starters experienced the corporate world predominantly through Zoom (ZM).
