How Workers Are Using AI

Rise of Workplace AI

That email from your coworker? It might have been written with AI.

Last month, research and consulting firm Morning Consult published its State of Workers report, shedding light on who is using AI at work and how they’re using it.

Almost half (44%) of employed adults said they’ve used AI for work, including 56% of millennials and workers with post-graduate degrees.

No, they haven’t been sipping piña coladas while ChatGPT leads their meetings. But they have been using AI to help them complete rote tasks and spark creativity.

Common Use Cases

According to the report, 60% of people who used AI for work said they used it to write emails and other messages, perhaps not surprising, given the fact that Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) prompt email users to utilize their AI products.

Among other top use cases, 59% said they used the tool to “ideate” and “spark creativity.” AI models including OpenAI’s ChatGTP and Anthropic’s Claude allow users to generate slogans, write a first draft of a report, and produce marketing plans.

Meanwhile, 57% of workers said they’ve leveraged AI for data analytics, including looking for patterns in large datasets, cleaning data, and creating data visualizations.

Additionally, workers said they used AI to write reports (56%), answer customer and client questions (56%), generate images (54%), make strategic decisions (52%), and code and program (52%).

An Imperfect Solution?

While AI is helping some do their jobs, not everyone shares the same feelings about the technology. Among those surveyed, 34% of U.S. adults thought that AI would have a negative impact on work, while 36% said it would be positive.

Before you assign AI your entire workload, keep in mind the technology is still prone to hallucinations such as false or inaccurate outputs. In other words, you’ll want to carefully vet any facts or figures it generates. It’s also important to check with your company before using the technology as some firms have restrictions on AI use due to data security, accuracy, and copyright concerns.
